Maths for Kids
Mathematical concepts are ones that last with you forever! Subtracting the complex formulae and complicated sums, fundamental maths for kids skills are essential for every toddler to learn. Here are some simple ways your child can incorporate numeracy skills into their daily routines.
1. During play time – Integrating numeracy within playtime is the easiest way to teach earl numeracy skills. Comparing toys and describing which is longer, shorter, heavier, lighter or holds less. Matching
2. Telling time – Start with including simple duration, ‘TV time is in 10 mins /TV time is at 8 o’clock. Integrate time-telling into your daily routine; E.g We have breakfast at 7 am, we read a book at 5 pm, it’s pool time at 4 in the evening. Encourage your child to count how many seconds to reach home, or tell time before you leave home, start a road trip, before and after their homework.
3. Cooking/ Baking: Recipe measurements, ingredients, prep time, cooking, or baking time are pretty simple ways to involve maths into your child’s life. As a reward, treat them to a cookie or something small every-time they apply math skills to their work.
4.Shopping: Grocery shopping, picking out the number/shape of fruits and veggies, deciding the amount of a product needed, checking the cost are some ways to involve maths. To step up a little with the age of the child, you can also try to explain how sales discounts, VAT, etc. are calculated. The concept of money and budgeting is an important life skill.
5.Important numbers – This is not just a way to involve math, but also crucial for every child to know their key contact numbers. Train your preschooler to learn phone numbers, house numbers and even birthdays.
6.Household chores – Within the home there are plenty of ways to involve math- during gardening- ‘let’s use the smallest pot’, ‘we will plant 5 seeds’ and also during dinner time; when setting the dishes, get your child to count the number of cutleries needed.
7.Activities – Have fun with some board games like Ludo, Snakes, and Ladder, Chess- all have elements of math in them- counting, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Arts and craft is another example that involves measurements and shapes. This will make learning math a lot more engaging and visually appealing.
8. Weather- A recurring factor in everyday life, get your preschooler to mention the weather, temperatures, percentages of humidity, and chances of rain. In this way, you won’t just be engaging in math, but your child will also get an incorporated geography lesson.
Knowing how essential maths for kids’ skills will be throughout your child’s life, it is crucial for you to repeat exercises as necessary and review progress.
